Located within walking distance of Shell Island Beach Club is the historic Sanibel Lighthouse.  Construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1884.  The lantern atop the structure first blinked its guiding light to ships headed for the port of Punta Rassa in 1885.  In 1974, the Sanibel Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
